Just two hours after Farmers Bank reported that they had been robbed at gunpoint, a suspect was in custody and officers had recovered the cash believed to have been taken from the bank.
Around 1:15 p.m. Thursday, a teller at the Farmers Bank branch on 1310 W. Center Street in Greenwood called police and said a man with a gun had just robbed the bank and fled on foot. Witnesses also told investigators later that they thought they recognized the robber as a regular customer named Eric Steele, who lived in Greenwood.
"The tellers really should be commended for doing a great job," said Lt. Will Dawson with the Greenwood Police Department. "They remained calm, had very clear notes about the suspect's description, even recognized the way he talked."
Dawson said that investigators spoke with Steele's relatives, who told them he had gone into Fort Smith. Greenwood Police notified the Sebastian County Sheriff's Office and Fort Smith Police, and found Steele also had two outstanding misdemeanor warrants. Dawson said sheriff's deputies were able to make contact with Steele at the Sears in Central Mall, and arrested him.
"Officers also located some cash in a coffee can in the suspect's vehicle, as well as a black handgun inside a backpack," he said. "We're processing the vehicle now as a potential crime scene."
Steele gave Greenwood Police investigators a detailed statement about his involvement in the armed robbery.
