The Greenwood Police Department along with Special Olympics of Arkansas and the Partner’s Club of Greenwood High School hosted its fifth annual Polar Bear Plunge at Vache Grasse Country Club.
This year’s plunge was an unqualified success, and we have continued to improve our totals from the previous year. There were a total of 24 plungers who raised 4,622.35, and none of this could have been possible without the support of the community. Simple Simon’s Pizza, Mazzio’s Pizza, the Vache Grasse Country Club, Sebastian County EMS, Dep John Miller, Jerry Bridges, and Treva Chouinard all contributed to make this event a success.
We added a new wrinkle this year with the Super Plunge. Lt Will Dawson, Sgt Mark Mergen, Officer Mike Oliver and Officer Ronnie Morris plunged throughout the night on Friday and braved freezing temperatures to help raise awareness for Special Olympics. “Clearing ice from a pool before you could jump into would stop most people”, said Lt James Flynn, “but not our super plungers, they pushed that aside and dove right in”. The local media even joined in to help with J. R. Davis of Fox News taking the plunge during one of the super plunges.
Dr Lee Johnson, Kristy Williams, and Patti Allison were the top three non-law enforcement fundraisers. Sgt Mark Mergen was the top law enforcement fund raiser with Lt Will Dawson finishing second. Jerri Chronister and the Partner’s Club of Greenwood High School pulled together and brought out numerous GHS students and athletes to participate in the plunge.
This year’s plunge was a fantastic success and our number one goal to make our 2010 our best to date, and with our continued community support, I know we can do it.
