In January 2001, the Greenwood Police Department joined a growing list of Police Departments across the Country by instituting a School Resource Officer (SRO). The SRO has become the fastest growing area in Law Enforcement and is a unique position that creates a positive image of Law Enforcement to the youth in our community.
The position works under what is called the “Triad” concept, Teacher-Counselor-Law Enforcement. The School Resource Officer will educate, counsel and protect the students and staff on a daily basis. The Greenwood Police Department partners with the School District to protect our students and faculty alike and will strive to create a safe and secure learning environment.
School Resource Officers attend training courses, which are conducted by Law Enforcement and Education personnel, and are specifically designed to aid the SRO(s) with the transition into the school environment. Officers learn three separate functions; how to work as a Police Officer in a school setting, how to work as a resource and a problem solver, and how to develop teaching skills necessary to achieve the common goal of educating our youth. The SRO program for the Greenwood Police Department operates as an attached unit to the Criminal Investigatiions Division. All criminal and non-criminal investigations are conducted by the individual officer assigned to a particular school.
Sgt. Mark Mergen and Inv. Josh Mourton are the School Resource Officers for the Greenwood Police Department; and have a combined 30 years of service. The School Resource Officers work with students and staff throughout the school district.
